Tu me dis, j’oublie. Tu m’enseignes, je me souviens. Tu m’impliques, j’apprends.
Tell me, I forget. Show me, I remember. Have me do it, I understand.
My philosophy around art-making is that everyone has the potential to be an artist and each person has a unique mark to make. I truly believe that art-making has a transformative power, and by developing the necessary skills and creating an environment that is conducive to it, it will occur. Painting can truly enrich peoples lives.
Long before I was aware of this proverb, I knew it to be the truth. As artists, there is something profound in the interaction with the material we work with. The art is in the development of that complex relationship between the material, the eye and the hand. Once aligned, it feels almost like magic and is astonishing – you can’t believe what your hands have just done. That feeling is indescribable and is what keeps us coming back for more.
